Module 1 Discussion

This discussion aligns with Learning Outcomes 1 and 2.

Rank in order from greatest to least the following three scholars of religion based on how persuasive you find their explanations for how religion functions: Emile Durkheim, Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx. It should be clear from your ranking why one figure deserves a greater position than another. Be sure to draw on factual details from the Learning Unit reading to justify your rankings.

Instructions

Students should complete their assigned Learning Unit reading and consult the discussion rubric before posting on the module’s discussion board.

  • Post your initial responses by the middle of the week so everyone has a chance to respond later in the week.
  • You are expected to post to the forum in a correct sentence and paragraph format. Remember to check for correct spelling and grammar.
  • You should return throughout the week to review the initial post made by others.
  • You must reply meaningfully to at least two peer posts.

Grading

This discussion assignment is worth 40 points toward your final grade. (1)

Module 1 Quiz consists of 20 questions worth 2 points each. Questions are drawn from a pool that includes multiple-choice, true/false, and multiple answer. Multiple answer questions are setup to allow for partial credit. You will have 60 minutes to complete the quiz with 1 attempt. (1)

Comparative Religion Essay & Rough Draft | Introduction

This assignment assigns with Learning Outcomes 1, 2, and 5.

For this World Religions course, students will write a rough draft and a final 2–3 page essay (700–1000 words) that compares one Eastern and one Western Religion.

Students will focus on 3 topics to compare and contrast in their essay, which might include:

  • History
  • Rules
  • Rituals
  • Suffering
  • Soteriological beliefs
  • Afterlife beliefs
  • Views towards women

There are two-parts to this assignment, both of which must be submitted:

  1. A rough draft of the comparative religion essay is due in Module 4. It is worth a total of 30 points.
  2. The final comparative religion essay is due in Module 7. It is worth a total of 100 points.

Grading & Formatting

There is a grading rubric for the rough draft and for the final essay. Be certain to review the grading rubrics to ensure you are meeting the criteria for each assignment. Students may use either MLA or APA formatting style, however the style chosen then needs to be consistently applied throughout the essay.
